Little Library: Ballet Books

Plié, Chassé, Jeté All Day!

Both of my daughters started ballet at age 3 and we loved collecting children’s books all about ballet. These are a few of our favourite books and we have read them for years! We love the beautiful artwork and the inspiring stories about girls who learn the dedication it requires to become a ballerina. I hope you enjoy this lovely little collection as much as we do!

Five Ballet Books we Love

Bunheads Misty Copeland
This is the story of young Misty Copeland who discovers her love of dance through the ballet Coppélia–a story about a toymaker who devises a villainous plan to bring a doll to life.

I want to be a Ballerina Anna Membrino
Practice makes perfect! In this book, Mia wants to be a ballerina just like her big sister. But Mia’s sister teaches her there is more to being a ballerina than just putting on the right clothes. She helps her practice and work hard to become a ballerina.

Miss Lina’s Ballerinas Grace Maccarone
This fun rhyming book is about eight ballerinas―Christina, Edwina, Sabrina, Justina, Katrina, Bettina, Marina, and Nina― who dance to the park, at the zoo, and even while doing their schoolwork. They are one perfect act, but when Miss Lina introduces Regina, a new girl, the group of nine’s steps become a mess.

Tallulah’s Nutcracker Marilyn Singer
We love this book especially at Christmastime, but read it all year round! Tallulah’s dream of being in a real ballet comes true when she gets a part as a mouse in the Nutcracker. On the night of the show, disaster strikes when Tallulah falls during the performance. With the help of some role models, Talullah finds out what it takes to be a real ballerina.

Tallulah’s Tutu Marilyn Singer
A young girl knows that she could be a great ballerina, if only she had her Tutu! In this story Tallulah is disappointed that she doesn’t get a tutu, so she quits her ballet class. But, she can’t stop thinking about ballet everywhere she goes, and returns to class after learning that ballet is more than just the tutu.
